BADLY BROKEN WINDOW GEARBOX

The most common problem Legend Locksmiths come across is broken gearboxes. These are operated by the handle and in turn engage the locking points securing the window. The locking points can corrode making the handle hard to turn which in turn puts excess strain on the gearbox which eventually fails. Other causes of breakage may be poor packing of the glass units and lack of lubrication. Ideally locking points should be greased twice a year to ensure smooth, fault free operation.

Broken Window Handles are another common problem. Usually failure is caused by wear and tear or the locking mechanism being stiff which puts extra strain on the handle. On some occasions if the handle has become floppy the spindle connecting handle and gearbox may have slipped out of the handle.

BENT FRICTION STAYS.

Window Hinges or Friction Stays allow windows to open smoothly and evenly, however they too can become worn through use or in some instances bent. Like window locking points they should be lubricated twice yearly to maximise performance. Different types exist to allow easy escape in case of fire and another type allows easy access to both sides of the window to make cleaning simpler.

Misted Panels are fairly common in older double glazed windows. Seals between the panes of glass break down allowing water vapour to penetrate, this condenses and causes unsightly runs which partially reduces clarity. Replacing the Double Glazed Units (D.G.U’s) can usually be done with very little inconvenience to the property owner.
